History of WCAIV&TI, Lafia

WCAIV&TI, Lafia, Nasarawa State. Pursuant to poverty reduction and wealth creation Policy thrust of the former Administration of His Excellency, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the Nasarawa State Government entered into Bilateral Agreement with the Singaporean Institute of Technical Education (ITE) in 2012 for the establishment of the Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim Vocational and Technology Institute Lafia with a view to providing vocational and technical skills acquisition to the citizen, particularly the youths of the State. The policy direction of the administration seeks to provide youth with economic empowerment through vocational and technical skills for diversification of the economy and for self-sustainability.

The initial desire of Nasarawa state Government was to partner with ITEES, Singapore in order to upgrade the existing four relevant Skills Acquisition Centres in Doma, Lafia, Nasarawa and Wamba, but deemed it necessary to establish a new Institute for Skills Acquisition and Vocational Education where the other four Centres would serve as feeders schools to the institute for a robust practical and specialized courses in the areas of:

  • Domestic Electrical Installation and Maintenance
  • Residential Plumbing Installations and Maintenance
  • Residential Air-Conditional Installation and Maintenance
  • Advanced welding and fabrication
  • Advanced Mechanical Technology
  • Micro-Computer Installation and Maintenance

To further demonstrate the commitment and continuity in all uncompleted projects by previous administration, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule desire to create wealth, generate employment and eradicate poverty, completed the Institute and adequately equipped it with the state of the art facilities and equipment for the training and imparting of relevant and contemporary vocational skills and entrepreneurship capacity for self employment of the youths, women and all citizen of Nasarawa State. Subsequently, the Institute was commissioned by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR in February, 24th 2022.

His Excellency Engr. A. A. Sule graciously named the institute after one of you of a blessed memory Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim who was the first Military Administrator of Nasarawa State when the state was created out of Plateau State in October 1996. This shows the commitment, passion and the contribution of the military to the steady growth and development of the state.

Accordingly, His Excellency Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule requested for the taking over of the institute by the Industrial Training Fund to facilitate the training of the people of Nasarawa State to enable them acquire relevant vocational skills and entrepreneurship knowledge in different trade areas for a certain period of time as spelt out in the MoU. Therefore, ITF took over the operation and administration of the institute through Dr. Daniel Ewuga Asele as Executive Director on 1st August, 2022 to provide structural operational guidelines to fully optimize the use of the facilities at the institute for skills training in support of the Nasarawa State Skills Intervention initiatives for youth empowerment for sustainable development.
